VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

From Our Founder

In 1995, my husband and I lost our male German Shephard, and our female Shephard was lonely. As experienced dog owners, we thought we could totally handle a beagle, and a beagle puppy at that, no problem! Life with a well-trained German Shephard did not prepare us for that next year!

We made all the rookie beagle parent mistakes but fell in love with the breed! From then on, we knew our home would always be ruled by this small, independent hound!

When Willie, our first beagle, was terminal with cancer in 2008, our son told us about Houston Beagle and Hound Rescue and suggested that we would be a good family for fostering. It was like giving Cookie Monster his first cookie!

My house has been full of beagles ever since! I joined the board of HBHR in 2011 and have been active in rescuing beagles ever since.

It didn’t take long to determine that there were too many senior beagles out there needing a place to live out their Golden Years. The Beagle Bungalow is a dream full filled for me and my husband, Rich! We talked about it for years. Unfortunately, Rich did not live to see our dream come true, but I know he is looking down with a huge smile with every beagle we bring in to care for!

What do our volunteers do?

– General upkeep of the yard includes raking leaves and spreading fresh pea gravel where needed. Filling holes that suddenly appear overnight is a regular job!

– General upkeep of the beagle room includes weekly laundry of all bedding, vacuuming and mopping the floor, vacuuming the furniture, cleaning the kennels and making the hard decisions on which toys are really nothing more than rags that need to be tossed!

– Organizing the supply shelves and opening boxes when a new shipment of donated items arrive is a fun activity!

– Love the Dogs! They all need special attention from walks to just sitting on the couch for some cuddle time. Baths, ear cleaning and trimming nails are not as much fun but needed chores that people can help with. All human interaction helps get them socialized and ready for their forever homes!

- The Memorial walkway will be started this Spring, so we will need volunteers to help lay the bricks for the first section to be laid.
