In a perfect world, there would be no need for rescue groups or a sanctuary for unwanted senior dogs. There are many things that need to happen for us to have this perfect world. With this blog, I will share a few of my observations and wishes over the next few months. Please share them with friends and family who may be looking to add a dog to their family!
When you are looking to add a dog to your family, the first thing you need to do is read about the different breeds. Attend events where you can visit with several different breeds. Try going to a dog park and talking with owners about their dogs.
The second thing you do is forget about getting for a puppy. Puppies need families with experience and another dog to teach them how to be a good pack member! First time dog owners need to find a middle-aged dog or older. Beagles stay young and active until they are well into their Golden Years. Your young kid does not need a puppy to grow up with! Young kids need an older dog who is tolerant of little hands. Young kid will learn how to care for a dog and will be ready for that puppy when older.
Lastly, really think about how much time you must provide a dog. They are not a toy that you can put away until you have time for it. They need attention, companionship, love and activity. A recent example is a woman who bought a puppy without checking with her apartment complex on the cost of having a dog. Her plan was to keep him in a bathroom while she worked full time away from home. This is not responsible pet ownership.
Our long-term goal is to educate the public on responsible pet ownership with the understanding that having a dog is a commitment for the entire life of the animal. The Beagle Bungalow is incorporated in the state of Texas and our federal EIN number is 88-2304043.
