Weight Watchers

For the Beagles with Zero Self-Control

I want to beat the drum, stand on a box and shout from the roof tops, once again, we are faced with beagles who are twice their normal weight! Beagles will eat whatever you offer them plus some. They must have a controlled diet with limited treats and lots of exercise. It is up to each owner to limit the amount of food that is offered their dog. You cannot just put a large bowl of food down and expect them to graze through the day! They will gobble it down until they can’t move …then ask for more! Milo has been losing 4-5 pounds a month but has leveled off. He was started on the green bean diet this month. You replace ½ of his normal kibble with frozen green beans. Don’t try using canned beans…too much salt! He still gets his spoonful of soft food and a couple treats a day. Joining Milo are two new fatties, Jake (on the poster) and Spuds. Jake at 63 pounds has the most to lose, but poor Spuds has two cribbled kneed from carrying around so much weight. He needs to lose 10 ponds before we can consider the needed surgery. Use a ½ cup to measure the food. If they are looking round…cut back. If they are looking skinny, add a little more. The heavy weights do get started on 2/3 cup of kibble. Only the large hounds and the super active young pups, get a full cup twice a day.
